Christmas Lights in Barcelona
With beautiful old buildings, narrow streets and numerous plazas, Barcelona is a great backdrop for Christmas light displays. This year Barcelona city centre’s lights were switched on by the Mayor on 24th November.
In general, when searching for Christmas lights it is best to head to the major shopping areas. However, sometimes it is also worth venturing further afield to find other interesting and creative Christmas light displays.

Main Christmas Light Displays
If you head to Plaza de Catalunya and the surrounding areas you will see some of Barcelona’s most impressive light displays. The Corte Ingles Department Store in the square is well-known for making an effort with its decorations on the store.
Running down the side of the Corte Ingles is the Ronda de Sant Pere. It is a smaller street than some of the others mentioned in this article, however, its lights are impressive.

Around the Mercat de Sant Antoni there are some impressive lights, some of which include the coat of arms of Cataluña.
Sustainable Energy Light Displays
This year has seen the introduction of some innovative new options with a focus on sustainability and environmental awareness. At four locations around Barcelona (detailed below) solar-powered Christmas trees have been constructed. They use small L.E.D lights and store up solar energy in the day to power themselves at night.
On a similar note, two further trees have been erected that are powered by bicycle power. This is a great activity for all the family- with three bikes available at each tree, it is possible to watch your own human energy powering the lights. As you peddle, the rings of light that make up the Christmas tree begin to light up. The faster that you peddle the more impressive the tree looks.
The trees themselves have a futuristic feel to them.
Details as to their time and location are available below.
