Top Five Club Nights in Barcelona at New Year

New Year's Eve in Barcelona is generally enjoyed differently to in other countries. The night typically begins with a long dinner shared with family or friends (for more information see our Guide to Spanish Cultural Christmas Traditions. Link at the foot of this page). This dinner sees in the New Year. It is not until after this that younger people start to head out to clubs and bars. For this reason a lot of the clubs don't really get going until after 02:00. You may choose to book somewhere to eat out for dinner prior to hitting the clubs. Alternatively, you could choose one venue that covers all aspects of the evening, including food. I have taken a detailed look into what is happening in Barcelona for New Years Eve and chosen some of the most interesting options.

Getting around on New Year´s Eve can often prove to be difficult. Thankfully, the Metro will be running all night, meaning that you will not need to rely on taxis- leaving options open for heading further afield.

Cosmic Jam at Mephisto Nightclub

The party formerly known as ‘Contraflow’ is fast becoming one of Barcelona’s most talked-about club nights. It is known for providing an alternative to the numerous techno nights that take place in the city. The music policy is eclectic and many of the DJs have links to the UK based Ninja tunes label. In a city that often fails to look past local DJs it has a reputation for offering international acts.

For New Year's Eve the promoters have offered to keep ticket prices low (see below), not changing them from their normal entry price. They state that this is their way of thanking their fans for the successful year that they have had. This may prove to be a rare opportunity to take advantage of their generosity, as ticket prices at New Year´s Eve are generally a lot higher than normal.

Tickets are not available in advance, so it will help to get to the club as close to midnight as possible to ensure entry.

New title? Is this a different club?

The club, Sala Mephisto, is traditionally a rock venue and holds approximately 450 people. It is a large space and its high ceilings and lack of comfortable chill-out areas may not appeal to all. However, with DJs who pride themselves on playing to a party crowd, the focus of this night will definitely be on the dancing.

The venue is not in the centre of town so you will probably need to catch the Metro to get closer to the club. This is the norm for most large clubs in Barcelona and is often worth the extra effort for larger soundsystems that aren’t available in the city centre.

Razzmatazz Club

The Crowd at Razzmatazz
The Crowd at Razzmatazz

On checking the New Year line-up for Barcelona’s largest club with eager anticipation, I was surprised to see that it included none of the big name international DJs that I had expected. For the most part the line up consists of Razzmatazz residents- a sure sign that the club feel safe in the knowledge that they need no special tricks to fill the venue to capacity on New Year's Eve.

Despite the lack of big-name DJs there is no denying that this super-club could prove to be a great choice for New Year´s Eve. With five rooms playing all different genres of music (see below), there really is something for everybody. This may prove useful if you are hitting the town with a large group of people - although, once you are through the doors of the club there is a high possibility that you will not be able to find them for the rest of the night!

In the main room of the club- Razz Club, Spain’s famous indie DJ- Amable will be hosting his “Best of 2008” party, playing all of the hits from the year that’s passed. They will also be giving out free ‘Razzmatazz ’09’ t-shirts with your ticket, to celebrate the event. Although ticket prices are higher than usual (see below), the cost includes two free drinks.

Pepino Restaurant and Cocktail Bar

Pepino’s Bar
Pepino’s Bar

This is a new restaurant and cocktail bar that has opened in Raval- an area off the Ramblas that is known to be popular for small, independent bars and restaurants. It has an interesting and cosy interior with both spaces for dancing and spaces to sit and eat or drink. It is popular amongst a trendy and more indie crowd, hosting nights such as B.G.W.M.G (Bikini Girls with Machine Guns!) and generally playing indie, rock and pop music.

For New Year´s Eve they are offering customers the opportunity to enjoy a whole evening’s entertainment. There is the option of a ticket that includes a luxurious three-course meal. With three options for each course, a bottle of wine for every two people and six further drinks, including a glass of cava, included in the price.

Alternatively, if you choose to have dinner elsewhere, you can purchase a ticket for the drinking and dancing part of the night. Although ticket prices are quite steep this is a very central location and an intimate setting for an easy-going evening with friends.

DJs on the night include Maxx, from the infamous and very popular Nasty Mondays nights. The whole ground floor area will be dedicated to DJs and a dancefloor, so don’t fear that dinner will stand in the way of dancing!

Angels & Kings Bar

This space is currently the talk of the town (with mixed reviews, of course!), making it an interesting destination for your New Years knees-up. It is the bar/club in the new Hotel ME. On the sixth floor of a large skyscraper hotel in Poble Nou, it is a classy space with some stunning views of the city from its outdoor terrace area. On exiting the extremely speedy lift you will enter a black and intimate space filled with red velvet curtains, interesting furniture and mug shots of rock icons.

The company also have bars in New York and Chicago and have come up with the theory that the euphoria of midnight should be experienced as many times as possible! For this reason they will be celebrating midnight in each different city with a different shot:

02:00 (Chicago) - “O-bama Shot” (Orange flavored vodka + energy beverage)
03:00 (NYC) - “Nuevo York” (Whiskey + ginger ale)
04:00 (Barcelona) - “Cocktail de Bienvenida” (Champagne + pomegranate)

The ticket price (see below) includes these shots, as well as three further drink tickets and a cocktail. The ticket also allows you entry to a second, downstairs bar. Drink tickets are valid in both bars.

Nitsa Club

If you are craving a no holds barred dance session this New Years Eve, Apolo may be one of the best options. They are one of the few large Barcelona clubs who are advertising their New Years party heavily and bringing in international DJs. TokTok and Soffyo are major players on the Berlin techno scene.

Apolo is a central Barcelona venue and ticket prices are reasonable considering the date.
