Review Del Mar Hotel Barcelona
Hotel del Mar Barcelona is located on one of Barcelona’s harbour-front squares. The space is not pedestrianised, so terrace space for cafes and bars is minimal. However, it is a beautiful area, with old buildings, distinctive porches under which the hotel hides, and a central statue.
The hotel’s main entrance can be found behind Roman – style pillars as part of an old building with ornate wrought iron balconies. Due to the hotel’s recent renovation, in 2006, the lobby’s décor is simple but modern and new. There is a maritime theme running throughout, with lots of blue, nautical memorabilia and harbour front maps.
The hotel staff were approachable and helpful with my questions and the atmosphere is sunny and active. The location is top-rate for holiday-makers looking to enjoy the beach and port as well as the city. However, if you want an action-packed city break a more central location may be advisable.

Hotel Facilities:
The hotel’s facilities are reasonably limited. There is no pool, fitness centre, bar or restaurant. However, there is an area where buffet breakfast is served. This is not included in the room price.
There is also a communal area available in the hotel, with cushioned seating and a television. This is open to all customers of the hotel.
Small pets are allowed to stay in the hotel.
Check-in is at 12:00 and check-out is also at 12:00.
Business Facilities:
The hotel’s location close to the beach and the old town means that its focus is more on tourists than businesses. There are no meeting rooms.
Wi-Fi access is available throughout the hotel. However, this must be paid for at the front desk.
Facilities for the Disabled:
The hotel contains one room that has been adapted for disabled use. It has widened doors and a special shower. There are also lifts to all floors.
Rooms:
The hotel contains 72 rooms over 4 floors. Single and double rooms are available. Rooms facing the street have double glazed windows to ensure that the noise from the street is minimized. Although, in this area, noise pollution should not be too much of a problem- the hotel is on a main street, but there are few bars in close vicinity and there is little traffic at night.
Ten of the rooms at the top of the building come with roof terraces and are the same price as the other doubles. The terrace provides views of the harbour and is certainly worth requesting.
The entire hotel is non–smoking, so there is no smoking in any of the rooms.
All of the rooms contain a television, air conditioning, a safe and an internet connection (that must be paid for).
Hotel Location and Facilities:
Hotel del Mar’s location is perfect for those hoping to enjoy both the beach and the city of Barcelona. It sits between Barceloneta beach area and the old town’s El Born.

| Port Vell |
The beach is a ten minute walk from the hotel, allowing you to take in the Port Vell harbour en-route. Barceloneta is also a useful area for local amenities such as supermarkets, pharmacies and banks. It also contains a beautiful food market in the area’s main square, off Calle Maquinista- definitely worth a morning visit for fresh seafood or picnic ingredients.
The hotel also sits on the doorstep of the El Born area – a favourite amongst locals and tourists alike for its boutique shops, independent bars and stylish restaurants. The area looks particularly pretty at night, when its old buildings and narrow streets are lit up by twinkling lights both inside and outside of the cosy bars. The area also contains some of Barcelona’s most popular attractions- the Picasso museum on Calle de Montcada, the gothic old church- Eglesia de Santa Marta del Mar and the Chocolate Museum (yes, that’s right, a chocolate museum!) on Calle del Comerc.
Located underneath the arches on the Palau Square, the hotel is joined by one of Barcelona’s most renowned paella restaurants - 7 Portes. This is a very traditionally Spanish restaurant, with beautiful old wooden doors, large open dining spaces and a distinctive chequered tiled floor. The food is reasonably expensive, but it is served with a sense of ceremony by suited Spanish waiters.

| Xampanyeria |
For a less formal Spanish experience, head to the nearby Xampanyeria, on Calle de la Reina Cristina. This small Spanish bar offers ridiculously cheap bottles of house cava for approximately 3 euros. These are served with an obligatory and very hearty sausage sandwich.
The nearest metro is Barceloneta- less than five minutes walk from the hotel. This provides access to all of Barcelona. However, much of Barcelona is in walking distance of the hotel- the base of the Ramblas is a ten minute walk, along the harbour front.
The hotel is a mere five-minute walk from Estacio de Franca- one of Barcelona’s largest train stations. This makes it very convenient for those catching the train from Barcelona airport. The station also services trains to Sitges (a pretty coastal town just outside Barcelona) and the South of France.
How to Travel from the Airport to the Hotel:
Via Taxi: A taxi from the airport should take about 25 minutes and cost around 25 – 30 euros depending on traffic and luggage.
Via Train: The RENFE train leaves the airport every half an hour and will take you to Estacio de Franca in about 35 minutes. A single ticket costs 2.80 euros. The hotel is about 5 minutes walk from the station. Alternatively, you can take a taxi form the train station if you have lots of luggage. This will take about 5 minutes and cost about 5 euros maximum.
Via Bus: Take the 'Aerobus ' to Plaza de Catalunya from directly outside the airport. The Aerobus generally runs every 10- 15 minutes and the journey time is 30 minutes. The hotel is 25 minutes walk from Plaza de Catalunya, or 15 minutes in a taxi that will cost about 10-12 euros. Alternatively, you can catch the Metro from Catalunya to Barceloneta, from where Hotel del Mar is a 5 minute walk. This will involve taking the Red line from Catalunya to Urquinaona. From Urquinaona it will be necessary to catch the Yellow line to Barceloneta.

In a Nutshell:
Hotel del Mar is a port–side location with a port–side atmosphere. The added bonus is that it is also within close walking distance of some of Barcelona’s most desirable city locations.
