Review of Hotel Omm Barcelona
This page will give you an outline of the designer hotel Omm Barcelona.
The page includes a full description of the hotel facilities and
the area in which the hotel is based.
Hotel Omm Barcelona is the name in design hotels at the moment.
The hotel is under the local empire Grupo Tragaluz, famous for designer
hotels and eateries all over Barcelona. Architect Juli Capela and
interior designers Sandra Tarrulla and Isabel Lopez are responsible
for the sleek and modern design, and they were rewarded when Hotel
Omm won the Best Hotel 2005 in the Travel and Leisure Design Awards
in New York.
You can’t fault the location of the Hotel Omm. Just off the
most up market shopping street in Barcelona, the wide and stylish
Passeig de Gracia, Hotel Omm is in easy walking distance to some of
Barcelona’s most famous attractions. Gaudi's masterpieces
La Pedrera and Casa Batlló are just a 5 minute walk away, in fact
they are visible from the Hotel’s roof terrace. Placa Catalunya
and La Rambla are a further 15 minute walk away. Alternatively you
can get the metro to Placa Catalunya which is 2 stops, from here
you can enjoy the Gothic Cathedral for culture, La Rambla for the
street performers and Corte Ingles if you have left anything at
home or want to have a coffee on the top floor to enjoy views over
the Placa.
The
area in which Hotel Omm is situated is very classy and there is
a plethora of restaurants and bars from which to choose. However
there are also good deals to be found if you wander round. I found
the most amazing café/restaurant the Mauri, Rambla Catalunya,
102. The restaurant is a 5 minute walk from the hotel and has an
incredibly tasty sounding menu del dia for 11 euros. Otherwise everything
you need can be found on Passeig de Gracia. There are numerous cash
points lining both sides of the street, but if you´re staying
at Hotel Omm you´ll probably be using your limited edition
credit card. With which you can enjoy the fruits of some very sophisticated
shops and tapas bars which are also to be found along the street.
Hotel Omm itself has 59 rooms which are all square, sparsely modernist
and have been designed to let in as much light as possible. The
rooms are all equipped with high quality sound systems, internet
access and phone lines.
As you walk into the hotel Omm Barcelona main you will find reception
is on your right and on the left are lots of comfy large sofas where
you can have coffee and muse over the days papers which are all
available in English, French and German. At the back of the hall
there is a café set against an abstract outdoor installation
which lets light come into the room.
The roof terrace is impressive and reminiscent of Ibiza with all
the wooden decking and pure white sofa deckchairs. There is a small
pool, just big enough to dip yourself into when the sun gets a bit
too much, but not too big as to actually have to swim and ruin a
designer bikini!
There are 2 fully equipped conference rooms which can hold 10 and
20 people.
The Hotel Omm restaurant is called the Moo Restaurant, and is directed
by the Roca brothers whose other restaurant in Girona has
2 Michelin stars. The menu consists of half portions which you can
design to suit your diet, or tasting menus, achingly hip, just like
the Hotel.
Attached to the Hotel Omm is also their lounge club Omsession which
is small and very much in keeping with the design ethos of the hotel.
You can pick up the program for the club in the lobby. Omsession
is open wed-sat and sometimes plays host to live music, but mostly
the Dj plays chill out and electro funk.
Hotel Omm Barcelona is not for everyone. I definitely didn’t
feel comfortable there at all, but it’s not designed for homely
comfort. The people there will look you up and down and they themselves
will be dressed up and looking over each others shoulders in case
there is anyone cooler in the vicinity. This is the place to see
and be seen for young, modern city folk.
