During a holiday it is always useful to know where your closest supermarket is. Whether you want to buy picnic ingredients, stock up your self service apartment, or simply buy a bar of soap you're likely to find yourself in the supermarket at some point during your visit.
In Barcelona supermarkets are often considered to be an expensive alternative to the markets when buying food. However, there are bargains to be found. You will also be able to buy certain items there that are not available in the markets - certain dried goods, toiletries, condiments etc.
In this article I will provide a list of a variety of Barcelona's supermarkets. It is important to check the opening times as these often vary in Barcelona. You will find some that are convenient when there is nowhere else to buy food.

On Barcelona's most famous street - Las Ramblas. This is one of the largest supermarkets in Barcelona's city centre. It has two floors selling a wide variety of products. It is a useful place to buy BBQ equipment. It also offers kitchen utensils, fans and a small selection of clothes such as underwear.
There is a pharmacy at the front of the shop.

El Corte Ingles is a well-known Spanish department store. It has a supermarket and 'Gourmet Food Club' in its basement. This is a good option if you are looking for more upmarket foods. It has large and impressive cheese, meat and patisserie counters. It also has an extensive 'international foods' section selling foods such as 'Tex Mex' and 'Latin American'.
The 'Supermercado' also offers a section catering for specialist food requirements including wheat free options and health foods.
'El Club Gourmet' offers deli style luxury foods.

This small supermarket in the centre of the El Born area is one of those very rare beasts in Barcelona - a well-stocked shop that is open seven days a week. It contains an off licence, a bakery, a fridge section and fresh fruit and vegetables. It is a very useful place to go to on Sundays when all of the other shops are closed.
