Barcelona Marathon 2011: Guide to 'Marato Barcelona's Race in The City Centre

Barcelona city plays host to an annual marathon that sees the city inundated with runners from all over the world. Barcelona Marathon 2011 is fast approaching and if you plan on competing you will need to think about registering soon. Once you've sent off that appliction, there's no turning back and you will need to get started on your training. Good luck – I will be cheering from the sidelines!

This page provides all of the details necessary for competing in the Barcelona Marathon 2011 – date and times, how to register, the marathon route, links to training advice, information on related events and contact details for the organisers.

Date and times of The 2011 Marathon

The event will be taking place on 6th March 2011.

The race begins at 08:30 at Avinguida Maria Cristina (see below for more details of the race route).

The time limit for the race is 6 hours.


How to register for the 2011 race.

You can register for the event either online of via post. The price of registration goes up after 20th December 2010 (see prices below), so if you have already decided that you definitely want to race, it is worth making your application as soon as you can.


How to register for Barcelona Marathon online:

To register online, it is necessary to go to the Official Barcelona Marathon Website - (Marato Barcelona) and fill in your details. The website is avaiable in Castellano, Catalan, English and French, so you should not find it too dificult to fill in the form.

Online registrations close on 20th February 2011.


How to register for Barcelona Marathon by post:

To register via post, it is first necessary to print out the form that is avaiable under 'Postal Registration' on the Official Marathon Website

You can then send the form to the address provided below, or alternatively you can fax it to the number below. You can only pay with a cheque if you have a Spanish cheque book. Alternatively you can fill in your VISA details on the form.

Postal registrations close on 20th February 2011.


Prices for registration to Barcelona Marathon:

Registration 8th March 2010 - 19th December 2010: 50.00 euros
Registration 20th December 2010 - 30th January 2011: 60.00 euros
Registration 31st January 2011 - 20th February 2011: 70.00 euros


Tip If you want to check that your registration has been processed, you can go to the Official Website and search your name under the section called 'Entry List'. Here you will be able to see yourself listed with your name, estimated race time, gender and country. You will also receive a confirmation letter in the post.


How to cancel your registration:

If you are injured or ill prior to the race, you can claim back half of your registration fee. To do this you must provide a medical certificate to the organisers. This should be sent to:

The deadine for making a request for reimbursement is March 1st 2011.


Running Route for the Marathon

The route for Barcelona Marathon 2011 begins at  Avenida Maria Cristina and heads towards Plaza Espanya. You will then head towards Plaza Universitat and on to Gran Via Corts Catalanes. After this you will head towards the sea and Arc de Triomf. From here you will head up Via Laietana and back up to the end point at Avenida Maria Cristina.

On the Official Marthon Website you can print out a pdf with the full route of the race on it.

Every 5km along the race route there will be a refreshment stand offering water, isotonic drinks, vaseline, fruit and sponges.


Training advice

On the Official Website there is training advice given to all runners under 'The Runner's Corner' section. It is split into different advice depending on the time in which you hope to complete the race.  Advice is provided regarding training and diet.


Related events for Barcelona Marathon 2011

There is a lot of activity in the city on the weekend of the 'big event'. The starting point of the race (see above) will play host to an exposition on 4th and 5th March 2011 from 10:00 – 19:30. Here you will be able to meet other racers and pick up your bib for the event (you will need your confirmation of registration letter to do this).

Before the race the annual 'Pasta Party' will be held. If you are racing, this is your opportunity to stock up on carbohydrates that will provide you with energy for the race the next day. The pasta party takes place at the exposition (see above) before the Marathon from 12:00 – 16:00. If you are running you and one friend can eat for free.

The day before the event, on 5th March 2011, anybody (whether you are running in the marathon or not) is invited to take part in the 4km breakfast run.  It starts at 09:30 in the Plaza Marques de Foronda. The route takes in the last kilometres of the Barcelona 1992 Olympic marathon. For full details of the route, see the Official Barcelona Marathon Website
