Q: Is the Magic Fountain closed to save water? I have been told it is closed all year, I am visiting Barcelona in September/October and would very much like to see it!

A: The number of times I have had to answer this question and variations of it that it now warrants its own dedicated answer in our FAQ. 

The answer is no, it is false and inaccurate to say that the Magic Fountain is closed to save water. 

We find that tourists are picking up inaccurate information often from online discussion forums where other tourists share their experience in the aim of helping each other. The information shared is often based on a tourist´s findings from just a few days of visiting Barcelona only. Alternatively some forums claim to have a "local expert" that moderates the forum. We recommend you check the credentials of any so called "local expert". Do they actually work at an official tourist information office in Barcelona? Often times such local "experts" are at best only living in the city and are not experts in supplying tourist information.

I have personally been dealing with dozens of  emails like this asking us if it is true or false that the Magic Fountain is closed due to water shortages.
 
This is the correct information:

1. The Magic fountain, is and always has been, operating to its normal operating hours. It has never closed due to "water shortages".
2. The Magic Fountain does not operate on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. It only operates on the evenings of Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sundays only. But this has always been the case and nothing to do with "water shortages".
3.  Even if there was a water shortage problem in Bacelona it would not have an impact on whether the Magic fountain would operate or not because the Magic fountain uses "Grey Water" which is not drinking water.
4. There are times when the fountain is closed for maintenance however this is nothing to do with "water shortages" it is only down to the requirement to undertake maintenance. We are not informed of the dates when the fountain is closed for maintenance.
5. If tourists are going to plan a trip to Barcelona I recommend they use a reliable and accurate information source for planning their trips. It can be useful to listen to what other tourists say about their trip however bear in mind it may well be inaccurate since they are basing their postings on their own limited experience only.  Also so called "local experts" may not be an "expert" in the true sense of the word in terms of supplying tourist information. Always check what source they are basing their information on. Do they work for a tourist information company or do they just live in the city?
