Carrying Luggage on RENFE and Metro from Barcelona Airport

Q: My wife and I intend to travel from Barcelona Airport to the city centre with large suitcases. Are the RENFE and Metro luggage trolley friendly, i.e. escalators rather than stairs and room to sit with a suitcase on the train?

A:  The answer below discusses what luggage facilities that are available when transferring from Barcelona airport to the city centre.

The Airport shuttle bus (called Aerobus) is an express bus service that runs back and forth between the airport (Terminals 1 and 2) and the city centre.  The Aerobus has a specially designed large rack space for luggage inside the bus. The Aerobus stops directly in front of all the airport terminals.

If you are travelling by RENFE train to the city centre there is plenty of space for you to put your luggage. The RENFE train from the Airport is used extensively by tourists with luggage so you will not have any problems finding a place to put your bags whilst on the train.

In general, the metro stations have escalators, but not all of them do have lifts. At the moment, many metro stations are being updated to allow a better access. Sometimes you will find escalators going the way up to exit the metro, but no escalators to go the way down to catch it. That may make it difficult to access  the metro with large and heavy luggage. Inside the first and the last car of the metro train, there is more space than in the other cars to put your luggage, but no special storage part. Depending on the time of the day, you will find many people travelling with you. If there are not too many people in the metro carriage, you may be able to sit down.

TipAlways make sure that you do not leave your luggage unattended. That way you will avoid the possibility of theft.
