Review Astoria Hotel Barcelona
I had the good fortune to be showed round this hotel by the manager, who was obviously very proud of his hotel, and rightly so. The Astoria is in a beautiful building, typical of the buildings in the area of Eixample where the hotel is located.
Renovations have occurred but the hotel has kept some of its original features and charm and the modern decoration combines nicely with hand painted murals and classic architecture.
Hotel Facilities
In the lobby area there is a lounge and a well-stocked bar, where the morning buffet breakfast is also laid out. The restaurant Astoria is art deco in style and serves up Mediterranean cuisine to the guests. There is also a pool table in one of the rooms which has a great collection of art deco posters on the walls.
The Astoria has the benefit of a stunning roof terrace which is unusual for a 3 star hotel and has views over Barcelona to the Sagrada Familia. On the terrace there is a small swimming pool and a bar that is open during the summer months. Near the pool there is also a small gym which is contained in a conservatory so you get full sunlight whilst working out.
Dogs are allowed in the hotel, and there is also parking available. The hotel has a courtesy smart car and whilst staying at the hotel you get free admission to the Barcelona Egyptian museum.
There is a laundry and ironing service.
Business facilities
According to the manager about 50% of the clientele are in Barcelona for business. The hotel offers 2 meeting rooms, 35 metres squared and 20 metres squared which have a capacity of 30 people.
One is a room with a table made from a pool table and has a lot of character thanks to the art deco decoration.
Rooms
The rooms have either been recently renovated or will be by the end of 2006. They are modern in design and quite small but stylish and perfectly comfortable. There are 117 rooms in all, and some of the suites have their own little terrace. The rooms are all equipped with air-conditioning, a direct telephone line, a safe, minibar and satellite/ pay per view TV. There is also a hairdryer in the marble bathroom. The rooms have been soundproofed although the road below is not that noisy.
Hotel Location and Facilities
The Astoria is situated in the charming area of Eixample which is known for being full of historically stunning buildings. On the other side of the hotel there is an attractive, old café like many you will find in the area. There is a pharmacy at the end of the road and a cash point just round the corner on Calle Enric Granados. The nearest metro is Diagonal which is a short walk away. On Diagonal you will also find many high-class shops and little restaurants. You are also a walk away from Passeig de Gracia, famous for having designer clothes shops and 2 of Gaudi´s emblematic buildings.
How to travel from the airport to the hotel
Via Taxi A taxi from the airport should take about 25 minutes and cost around 25 - 30 euros depending on traffic and luggage.
Via Train The RENFE train leaves the airport every half an hour and will take you to Passeig de Gracia station in about 25 mins and costs 2.60 Euros for a single ticket. From Passeig de Gracia you have to change for the Green Line Metro to Diagonal and your hotel is a 10 minute walk from the metro.
Via Bus The Aerobus will also take you from the Airport to Catalunya station and costs 4.05 Euros. The journey time is around 30 minutes. From Catalunya you need to take the Green line metro to Diagonal and your hotel is a 10 minute walk from the metro.
