Review: Silken Gran Havana Hotel Barcelona
On a corner of Gran Via, in an imposing building dating from 1872 is the Gran Havana Hotel Barcelona. The historic building was converted into a hotel in 1991 and was renovated in 2002. However contrasting with the exterior of the building is the simple modernity of the interior. This hotel is classy and very popular with conventions, in fact when I was there there was the international motocross convention!
Hotel Facilities
Grand Palace is the name of the hotel’s restaurant that serves up mostly seasonal Catalan based cuisine. There is also a full buffet breakfast here every morning complete with a dieter’s choice menu. In the lobby underneath the huge kidney-shaped skylight is the bar which has live piano music from 20:00-21:00. Supper & Blues takes place on the first Thursday of every month. It is an event which began 10 years ago and fuses cuisine with some live blues/ jazz music.
One of the best things about this hotel is its sun terrace and swimming pool. Here you can have a swim, relax and look out towards the mountains of Tibidabo whilst soaking up the sun. You can also book a range of massages at the hotel which cost 60 euros an hour.
Business Facilities
The Gran Havana hotel Barcelona has a conventions department which can help with the organization and running of functions and business meetings. The meeting rooms are equipped with audiovisual resources and there is also a secretarial service and simultaneous translation facilities. There is Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.
Rooms
The Gran Havana hotel Barcelona has 145 rooms which were all part of the refurbishment in 2002. The rooms are all modern, with marble bathrooms and furniture made from African bubinga wood. All the rooms have air-conditioning, a minibar, satellite TV, internet access and Wi-Fi. There are also 4 suites and 6 junior suites and 10 of the rooms have their own terrace. The hotel is situated on the corner of the wide Gran Via so enjoys direct sunlight for most of the day.
Hotel Location and Facilities
The Gran Havana hotel is in an up-market area of town, on a picturesque part of Gran Via. The hotel is very central, a 10 minute walk from Passeig de Gracia where there is some great shopping to be had, as well as 2 of Gaudi´s most recognizable buildings. Las Ramblas is a further 5-10 minutes. There is a cash point 2 minutes down the road at number 637 and for good cafes I would recommend going to Passeig de Gracia where you can sit outside and people watch whilst you have a coffee. There is a very old, beautiful pharmacy 5 minutes down the road towards Passeig de Gracia as well.
How to travel from the airport to the hotel
Via Taxi A taxi from the airport should take about 25 minutes and cost around 25 - 30 euros depending on traffic and luggage.
Via Train The RENFE train leaves the airport every half an hour and will take you to Passeig de Gracia station, in about 25 mins and costs 2.60 Euros for a single ticket. Once at Passeig de Gracia you can walk to the hotel in about 10 mins.
Via Bus The Aerobus will also take you from the Airport to Catalunya station and costs 4.05 Euros. The journey time is around 30 minutes. From Catalunya you have a 12 minute walk to the hotel
