Monastery of Pedralbes in Barcelona

Page Content

The Monastery of Pedralbes is one of Barcelona’s outstanding examples of Catalan Gothic architecture founded by Queen Elisenda of Montcada in 1326. It is located in Pedralbes, a nice residential area in Barcelona. This place is known for its impressive central cloister which is considered one of the largest Gothic cloister in the world. You will see it has a central green garden with three floors, two galleries, arches and columns decorated with the symbol of the Kings of Aragon and the House of Montcada. Then in one of the cloister’s wings you will see the crypt of Queen Elisenda.

Today it is now a museum with permanent exhibitions showing the history, culture and art of the community that once lived there. It is also home to a small community of nuns, the order of Saint Claire.
