Antibodies tests are also referred to as serology tests. The world “serology” refers to blood serum testing and therefore the tests performed by the testing centres are performed with a blood sample (the usual blood test in a vein of your arm).
Note that rapid serology tests or rapid antibody tests refer to the quick antibody tests performed with a finger prick test. The testing centres recommended on this page perform serology tests with blood samples, they do no perform quick antibody serology tests.
IgG antibody test vs. IgG & IgM antibody test – What’s the difference?
There are two types of antibody tests that enable to measure your coronavirus immunity:
1. IgG antibody serology tests that only detect IgG antibodies
2. IgG & IgM antibody tests that detect both IgG and IgM antibodies
IgM antibodies are produced much quicker than IgG antibodies and disappear around 3 weeks after the COVID-19 infection or vaccination. IgC antibodies are produced later but remain in the blood during around 6 months and provide long term immunity.
IgM antibodies are produced around 7 days after the COVID-19 infection or vaccination. They become detectable with an antibody serology test that detects IgM antibodies from around day 10 when they are in high enough concentration. IgM antibodies keep increasing up to around day 14. After around day 14, IgM antibodies start to drop.
IgG antibodies are produced around 14 days after the COVID-19 infection or vaccination. The IgG antibodies increase in concentration up to around day 21 after the infection or vaccination and will last in the body for around 6 months.
Note that all these time periods vary depending on each person, as we all have different immune responses.
IgG & IgM antibody tests are a more complete test as they measure two type of antibodies, while as its name suggests, IgG antibody tests only measure IgG antibodies.
As IgG antibodies remain detectable with an antibody serology test during approximately 6 months after you got COVID-19 or you got vaccinated, you will want to get a coronavirus serology test between 2 weeks and 6 months after you got infected or vaccinated.
