COVID-19 PCR test in Barcelona: How and Where To Get Tested

Page Content

Latest update: 23 June 2022

PCR tests are one of the most common coronavirus tests required to travel from Barcelona to any country.

On this page you’ll find information about PCR nasal tests and PCR saliva tests, prices for PCR tests in Barcelona, delivery period of COVID-19 test certificates and opening days and times of different medical centres and laboratories. We also provide you with tables where can compare different testing centres and where you can find the links to book the PCR test that meets your needs.

The comparison tables for PCR nasal tests and PCR saliva tests that you can find just below will enable you to view:

  • Different testing centres in Barcelona
  • The area of Barcelona where the testing centres for PCR tests are located
  • The opening days times of the testing centres
  • The price of the PCR tests
  • The PCR test results and travel certificate delivery period
  • The closest metro station from the PCR testing centre

The comparison tables will also enable you to book your PCR nasal test or your PCR saliva test at the testing centre that meets your needs in terms of area, opening times, price, and test results delivery time.

We have also provided extended details on PCR nasal and saliva tests below the tables that we also recommend you to read. You might prefer to get a PCR saliva test over a PCR nasal test which can be uncomfortable.

In addition, we have explained the reasons why tourists and travellers should book their PCR test with the test centres listed on this page. We also tell you about the importance of choosing  a test centre that is set up to assist you should you test positive for COVID-19 before your flight.

As each country has its own COVID-19 test requirements, we strongly advise you to check the latest entry regulations for your country of destination to know which are the coronavirus test requirements before you book your PCR test. You can do this by checking the official COVID-19 page of your country of destination or the official airport website of your country of destination.

PCR test or RT-PCR - What's the difference?

Some countries, airlines or other official websites will mention on their travel requirements that you need an RT-PCR test, while others will say you need a PCR test. You might wonder about the difference between an RT-PCR and a PCR test. There is none. All PCR tests provided by the testing centres listed on our pages are RT-PCR tests, which stands for Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction, the laboratory technique used. Your PCR test certificate will mention both RT-PCR and PCR, so you don’t have to worry about your airline or transport company not seeing either of these terms on your certificate. We confirmed this with the diagnostic specialists at all the labs listed on our site. All PCR test certificates provided by the testing centres listed on our pages are FIT-TO-FLY, which means valid for aeroplane flights and any means of transport from one country to another.

Factors for tourists and travellers to consider when choosing a COVID-19 testing centre

If you're a tourist or traveller, there are 4 main considerations to make before choosing a testing centre for your COVID test, which we have given below. The testing centres we have selected and listed in the tables below meet all four of these criteria for travellers.

1. Communication with the testing centre in your language about your test

The ability to communicate with the testing centre in your languages is essential.

Testing centres we have listed in the tables below enable you to book your COVID test appointment in your own language directly with the testing centre. You will receive your appointment confirmation in your own language, and you can communicate directly with the test centre in your own language. Most general-purpose testing centres only communicate in Catalan or Spanish and often do not speak other languages. Test centres that do not speak your language will make it difficult for you to understand what you're booking or communicate with them if you have any questions or issues. It is important that you communicate specific details with the testing centre, e.g. to get clarifications from the testing centre about details of your test or if you need to modify your test certificate, or even if you need to change your appointment. The testing centres we've listed in the tables below can communicate with you via email in any of the following languages:

English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese, Russian and Chinese.

2. COVID certificates that meet specifications for travel e.g. FIT-TO-FLY

If you need to get a COVID test certificate to travel, you must ensure it is valid for travel. Suppose your certificate doesn't meet the requirements of your country of destination. In that case, you will likely have issues with the authorities of your country of destination upon arrival or boarding your flight. The testing centres we listed in the tables below all issue test certificates valid for travel to all World destinations. Click on the blue buttons on the comparison tables. You will be able to see specifically the details indicated on your COVID test certificate to double-check they meet the requirements of your destination country and avoid any unpleasant surprise at the airport.

3. Receiving your COVID Certificates on time is essential when you're on holiday

If you need a COVID test certificate to travel, you'll need to receive it on time for your trip. The testing centres in the tables below understand the importance of delivering your test certificates on time for travellers. They also ensure to inform you of the actual delivery times of your certificate, and not approximate delivery times that may not be met. When you have a flight to catch, you don't want to feel anxious because the testing centre is late sending your COVID test certificate or, worse, missing your flight and rescheduling your entire trip.

4. Test centres that work by appointment will reduce your queuing time

The test centres we've listed in the tables below work by appointment only, meaning your waiting time to get your COVID test is substantially lower than test centres that do not work by appointment. Most general-purpose COVID testing centres do not offer appointments, which can mean that you can be in a long queue for several hours to get tested. Working with appointments also enables the test centre to plan their staff resources according to the number of tests to be performed and to ensure they always have enough test kits and reagents so that you don't find a closed door when you arrive at the test centre. Not waiting for a long time to get tested is important when you're on holiday because you'll want to use your time in Barcelona to enjoy the city. In addition, it feels reassuring to know the medical staff are specifically waiting for you. Test centres that work without appointment mean you will not know for sure that you'll be able to get your test done when you need it to travel. Some test centres that don't work by appointment have been known to turn people away once they reach capacity.

Please note that during peak tourist season (June, July and August) and holiday periods during the year, even test centres that offer appointments will get very busy, and there could also be a queue. However, the queue will be considerably shorter than a test centre that does not work by appointment.

Another important reason for making an appointment for your COVID test is that you can book the test well in advance – even before you visit Barcelona. Advanced reservation of your test will give you peace of mind that you will have your test when you need it. It is not a good idea to rely on a test centre that does not work by appointment when you have a return flight to take and must therefore have your COVID test certificate ready by a specific time and date. The only way to be sure you will be tested on time is by making an appointment with the test centre in advance.

The COVID testing services we list in the tables below understand and have specifically developed their service to meet the needs of travellers and people on holiday, unlike general-purpose testing centres that are more geared up for testing locals.

5. Test centres registered with the Catalan Health Authority

The testing centres listed in the tables below and the laboratories they work with are officially authorized by the Catalan Health authority. Getting tested by an accredited testing centre is essential because the certificates are valid certificates for travel and meet quality standards set by the Catalan Health authorities. Some test centres are not registered with the Catalan health authorities, and therefore their certificates may not be valid for travel. We have heard of many cases of hotels recommending cheap testing centres only to find that the certificates were not suitable for travel.

The table below compares the different PCR nasal testing centres, their location in the city of Barcelona, their operating hours, test prices, test results delivery time and nearest metro.

We have highlighted in light green the testing centres for which payment is not required upon booking and for which you'll pay for your test at the front desk of the testing centre before getting tested. The testing centres that are not highlighted in light green require payment in advance upon booking.

Also, when making an appointment is needed before going to the testing centre, we have indicated (Appointment) next to the opening times of the testing centre.

Special COVID test certificates

Some test centres can also issue special COVID certificates in addition to the FIT-TO-FLY and valid for travel COVID test certificate that you will receive after getting tested. These special COVID test certificates include:
  • EU Digital COVID Certificates for your negative test result
  • ISO 15189 certificates that are needed to fly to specific destinations
  • The special Japanese certificate needed to fly to Japan

In the tables below, we have indicated ‘EU Digital COVID Certificate available’, ‘ISO 15189 certificate available’ and ‘Japanese certificate available’ when the test centres can provide these certificates.

You will find more information about getting these certificates from the test centres that can provide them by clicking on the blue buttons in the tables below.

The most common PCR test type performed is through a nasal swab which can be very uncomfortable. However, there is another type of non-invasive and more comfortable PCR test: the PCR saliva test. What a lot of people don't realise is that the saliva test is just as valid as the nasal test to issue the travel certificate.

PCR tests, whether performed with a nasal swab or a saliva sample, are both molecular diagnoses to detect the presence of the virus SARS-CoV-2. The technique used to analyse the nasal or saliva samples, the specificity and the reliability of the test are exactly the same for a nasal or a saliva PCR test. Which means the end result is exactly the same.

With a PCR nasal test, a swab is inserted quite deeply into your nose so this can be uncomfortable. With a PCR saliva test you’ll only be requested to provide a saliva sample by spitting into a sample container. If you want to get a PCR saliva test, make sure not to smoke, eat or drink anything for 30 minutes before your test because it could invalidate your test.

Why are PCR nasal tests offered more than Saliva tests?

PCR nasal swabs were the first available PCR tests and are therefore performed by all testing centres in Barcelona. As a result, the PCR nasal swab test is the most common PCR test. In addition, most of the visuals referring to PCR tests show nasal PCR tests, so you might think a PCR test is necessarily done with a nasal swab.

PCR saliva tests are taken by people "in the know" or if you have kids who need to get a PCR test, you might prefer to get a PCR saliva test. Note that kids need to be old enough to understand they need to generate enough saliva and spit in the sample bottle provided.

As indicated above, if you want to get a PCR saliva test, make sure not to smoke, eat or drink anything for 30 minutes before your test because it could invalidate your test.

When looking up the coronavirus test requirements of your destination country, make sure to check if there is a note regarding the type of PCR test accepted. If there is no specification regarding nasal or saliva tests, then you can conclude that both are accepted.

In the table above, which enables you to compare and book your PCR saliva test, you will also find testing centres in Barcelona that perform saliva tests.

Our Insider Tip

You can also take your PCR test at your tourist accommodation in Barcelona and Catalonia to avoid having to go to a test centre. A qualified nurse will come to your hotel, tourist apartment, home or any other location to perform your test at your desired appointment time on the day of your choice, from Monday to Sunday. If you want to learn more about this at home COVID testing service, visit our page about PCR tests at your accommodation.

The PCR test prices indicated on this page are for individuals. If you´re in a group from 6 people onwards, COVID tests for groups can be arranged at your group hotel or event in Barcelona or at a test centre for groups.

When you will receive your PCR test certificate

As you can see on the comparison tables for PCR nasal tests and PCR saliva tests above, the prices of the COVID-19 tests vary between the testing centres of Barcelona and also vary depending on how quick you want to get your test results.

If you need a negative coronavirus test travel certificate, you will need to get tested between 24 to 72 hours prior to your departure or arrival in the country you aim to travel to. Depending on the laboratory and test certificate delivery time option you select from the tables above, you’ll either get your PCR results within 3 hours after you get tested, or the same day of your test in the evening, or the next day in the evening. You fill find more details on the time ranges during which you´ll receive your certificates by clicking on the blue buttons on the comparison tables above.

The laboratories that analyse PCR test samples work until midnight to issue certificates. If you have an early morning flight, and if you don´t want to feel stressed during the whole evening before your early flight waiting for your certificate to arrive in your mailbox, we recommend you either get tested:

  • The day before your flight and choose the option to get your PCR test certificate within 3 hours. This way, you´ll know exactly when you´ll receive your certificate, and you won´t feel anxious wondering when exactly you´ll get your certificate.

  • Two days before your flight -if the COVID test requirements of your destination country allow you to do so- and that you choose the same-day results option. This way, as you´ll still have one full day ahead of your flight, you will not feel stressed during the whole evening waiting for your test certificate.

In addition, if for any reason there is an error on your PCR test certificate, such as a typing issue with your name or date of birth, or any other clerical issue, you will have time to get it fixed by the test centre before your early morning flight.

The importance of choosing a test centre that is set up to assist you should you test positive for COVID-19 before your flight

If you make your appointment for your COVID test at the test centre located in the Sagrada Familia area or with their testing service at your accommodation, you will be looked after and assisted should you test positive for COVID-19.

The testing centres informed us that approximately 10% of people who get a pre-departure COVID test turn out to have a positive COVID test when they had no symptoms and were only getting tested to get their COVID test certificate for travel. If you test positive, you will not be able to catch your flight or travel. You would be required to quarantine in Barcelona for 7 days before getting a letter of recovery or a negative COVID test, depending on the requirements of your destination country.

If you are travelling with your family, this could mean your entire family might not be able to travel -unless the family member with COVID stays in Barcelona while the rest of the family carries on with the travel plan. Alternatively, if your child has COVID, you will have to stay in Barcelona with your kid until he recovers. If you or another member of your group test positive, the test centre in the Sagrada Familia area that performs testing at your accommodation will assist you as part of their COVID testing service.

This is one of the important reasons we have selected this particular testing centre for COVID testing for travellers. Their service is geared up to deal with tourists' and travellers' needs for COVID testing and provide support if you test positive.

The assistance provided by the test centre to foreign travellers whose COVID test result is positive includes the following:
  • Recommendations on additional testing that might be needed before you can travel.
  • Explanations on the isolation period needed before you can travel.
  • Information on how and when you'll be able to fly.
  • They provide you with the contact details of the testing centre's English and Spanish speaking doctor should you need medical advice. You will be able to contact the doctor by phone, messaging apps or email for any COVID symptoms or health-related questions.
  • Recommendations on how and where to extend your stay if you don't have the financial resources.
  • Answering any questions you might have.

If you decide to get your COVID test elsewhere, then there is no assurance that your test centre will support you if you test positive for COVID. Your test centre might inform you of the procedure that locals have to follow (e.g. contacting your primary health care medical centre to get your sick leave), which will add up to your confusion.
General testing centres usually only provide the testing service. They do not understand the specific needs of tourists or travellers if they test positive and do not provide the support you need. With a general test centre, you could feel isolated and wonder what you need to do.

To book your COVID test at the centre located in the Sagrada Familia area or to book your COVID test at your accommodation and get free assistance should you test positive, scroll up to the comparison tables on this page and click on the blue booking buttons to learn more about them and make your appointment for your COVID test.

Question: I'm flying to Hong Kong from Barcelona on the 8 of January 2022 at 14:00, and I need to take a PCR test on the 6 of January. However, it seems all clinics for testing are closed on the 6 of January as it's a public holiday. Do you have any recommendations for me?

Answer: Indeed, all the test centres listed in the tables above on this page are closed on the 6 of January. Note that PCR tests for Hong Kong need to be taken within 72 hours before your scheduled departure time. Therefore you can also get tested on the 7 of January. Upon booking your appointment for your PCR test, make sure to choose the 'same day results' option to get your test results on the 7 of January. If you prefer to receive your test results earlier, we recommend you choose the '3 hour results' option to receive your PCR test certificate 3 hours later. Finally, PCR test certificates must be issued by a laboratory with ISO 15189 certification when flying to Hong Kong. On our dedicated page about test and travel requirements to fly from Barcelona to Hong Kong, we've listed a test centre in Barcelona that will provide the ISO 15189 certificate requested to fly to Hong Kong. We strongly recommend you visit this page and book your PCR test appointment at a test centre that can provide the ISO 15189 certificate requested by the Hong Kong authorities to avoid major issues at the airport.

Question: I need to get tested on a public holiday in Barcelona as I'm flying from Barcelona two days after. However, it is a public holiday in Barcelona, and I'm having trouble finding a test centre open. Can you help me?

Answer: Whenever a test centre is open or closed during a public holiday, we will indicate it on the tables above on this page. In the event that all test centres are closed on a public holiday, you can always get tested the day after and choose the 'same day results' option upon making your appointment for your COVID test so that you'll receive your PCR test certificate on time for your flight the next day.

Question: I'm a fully vaccinated US citizen coming to Barcelona soon. I'll need to take a COVID test in Barcelona before my flight back to the United States. What happens if my test is positive? Will I need to keep taking PCR tests again and again until I test negative to be able to fly back?

Answer: According to the official website of the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people that recently recovered from COVID can continue to test positive during 3 months after they had COVID. The CDC doesn't recommend that you keep taking tests within 3 months after your first positive test and states that you can travel with your documentation of recovery provided you've completed your isolation period. As explained on the official link given above and also on the Airline Checklist of the CDC, the documentation of recovery consists of your positive test results of a test taken within the last 90 days and a certificate from a healthcare provider or a public health official that states you are cleared.

If you get positive PCR test results, the testing centre near Sagrada Familia that we've listed in the tables above will inform you of the procedure you need to follow. After 10 days of isolation, if you didn't have COVID symptoms during the past 3 days and upon assessing your health condition, the doctor of the testing centre will issue your certificate of recovery that you'll need to fly.

According to this testing centre that is used to assist American citizens that test positive and to issue their certificates of recovery, you will need to book your flight back to the United States with an airline from the USA, and your flight must be direct to the USA (no stopovers before you reach the United States). Therefore we recommend you book your PCR test at the testing centre near Sagrada Familia as they'll be able to assist you with the protocol to follow in case you test positive, with anything you may need during your isolation and with your certificate or recovery for you to be able to fly back.

Question: My home country requires that I take a PCR test in Barcelona 48 hours before flying back home. If I test positive, according to Spanish regulations, I’ll need to self-isolate for 10 days. Can I self-isolate at the accommodation of my choice such as my hotel or tourist apartment in Barcelona or will I need to self-isolate in a quarantine hotel ?

Answer: You can self-isolate at the accommodation of your choice. Note that we’ve learned from one of the testing centres listed on our site, that if you cannot afford to extend your stay for 10 additional days at your hotel or tourist accommodation, there are ‘Health Hotels’ in Barcelona were you can self-isolate at no extra charge. If you test positive, the testing centre near Sagrada Familia that we’ve listed above can assist you and arrange your stay at a ‘Health Hotel’. However note that as the situation changes quickly, the 'Health Hotels' might no longer offer their services by the time your travel. If you’re worried to test positive, we recommend you book your PCR test at the testing centre near Sagrada Familia as they’ll assist you with the protocol to follow in case you test positive, they’ll answer any questions you might have and they’ll do the best they can to arrange your self-isolation at a ‘Health Hotel’ in Barcelona if needed.
