We also provide you with tables where can compare different testing centres and where you can find the links to book the PCR test that meets your needs.

The comparison tables for PCR nasal tests and PCR saliva tests that you can find just below will enable you to view:

We have also provided extended details on PCR nasal and saliva tests below the tables that we also recommend you to read. You might prefer to get a PCR saliva test than a PCR nasal test which can be uncomfortable.

As each country has its own COVID-19 test requirements we strongly advise you to check the latest entry regulations for your country of destination to know which are the coronavirus test requirements before you book your PCR test. You can do this checking the official COVID-19 page of your country of destination or the official airport website of your country of destination.

PCR test or RT-PCR - What's the difference?

Some countries, airlines or other official websites will mention on their travel requirements that you need a RT-PCR test while other will mention you simply need a PCR test. You might wonder what is the difference between a RT-PCR and a PCR test. There is none. All PCR tests provided by the testing centres recommended on our pages are RT-PCR tests, which stands for Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction, the laboratory technique used. Your PCR test certificate will mention both RT-PCR and PCR on it so you don’t have to worry about your airline or transport company not seeing either of these terms on your certificate. We confirmed this with the diagnostic specialists at all the labs we have recommended on our site. All PCR test certificates provided by the testing centres recommended on our pages are FIT-TO-FLY, which means valid for aeroplane flights and for any means of transport from one country to another.

Important note: The importance of booking in advance to ensure availability

Testing centres get very busy and can reach capacity during the following days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. It is highly recommended that you choose a testing centre that offers advanced appointments (marked with Appt in the tables below) for these days. In addition it is also highly recommended to book your test in advance to ensure there is availability for your appointment at the testing centres. If you leave it to the last minute to book your test there may not be availability. If you can we recommend you book your test for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday's which have much more availability and, if not, then try to book your test as far in advance as you can if you need to be tested on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The table below compares the different PCR nasal testing centres, their location in the city of Barcelona, their operating hours, test prices, results delivery time and nearest metro.

We have highligted in light green the testing centres for which payment is not required upon booking and for which you'll pay for your test at the front desk of the testing centre, before getting tested. The testing centres that are not highlighted in light green require payment in advance upon booking.

Also, when making an appointment is needed before going to the testing centre, we have indicated (Appt) for Appointment next to the opening times of the testing centre. When an appointment is not needed and you can go to the testing centre whenever you want during opening hours with your booking confirmation, we have indicated (NA) for No appointment next to the opening times of the testing centre.

The most common PCR test type performed is through a nasal swab which can be very uncomforable. However, there is another type of non invasive and more comfortable PCR test: the PCR saliva test. What a lot of people don't realise is that the saliva test is just as valid as the nasal test to issue the travel certificate.

PCR tests, whether performed with a nasal swab or a saliva sample, are both a molecular diagnosis to detect the presence of the virus SARS-CoV-2. The technique used to analyse the nasal or saliva samples, the specificity and the reliability of the test is exactly the same for a nasal or a saliva PCR test. Which means the end result is exactly the same.

With a PCR nasal test, a swab is inserted quite deeply into your nose so this can be uncomfortable. With a PCR saliva test you’ll only be requested to provide a saliva sample by spitting into a sample container. If you want to get a PCR saliva test, make sure not to smoke, eat or drink anything for 30 minutes before your test because it could invalidate your test.

Why are PCR nasal tests offered more than Saliva tests?

PCR nasal swabs were the first available PCR tests and are therefore performed by all testing centres in Barcelona. As a result, the PCR nasal swab test is the most common PCR test. In addition, most of the visuals referring to PCR tests show nasal PCR tests so you might think a PCR test is necessarily done with a nasal swab.

PCR saliva tests are taken by people "in the know" or if you have kids who need to get a PCR test, you might prefer to get a PCR saliva test. Note that kids need to be old enough to understand they need to generate enough saliva and to spit in the sample bottle provided.

As indicated above, if you want to get a PCR saliva test, make sure not to smoke, eat or drink anything for 30 minutes before your test because it could invalidate your test.

When looking up at the coronavirus test requirements of your destination country, make sure to check if there is a note regarding the type of PCR test accepted. If there is no specification regarding nasal or saliva test, then you can conclude that both are accepted.

We have identified a laboratory that delivers home collection kits for PCR saliva tests to your accommodation in Barcelona, whether you're staying at a hotel, a tourist appartment or at your home.

You can book your at-home PCR saliva test online and you will receive your FIT-TO-FLY PCR test certificate to your email address, 24 hours after you conducted your test.

Click here to learn more about self test kits for PCR saliva tests delivered at your accommodation.

On the table above, that enables you to compare and book your PCR saliva test, you will also find testing centres in Barcelona that perform saliva tests.

Prices of the COVID-19 PCR tests, delivery period of the test results and opening days to get your PCR test

As you can see on the comparison tables for PCR nasal tests and PCR saliva tests above, the prices of the COVID-19 tests vary between the testing centres of Barcelona and also vary depending on how quick you want to get your test results and when you want to get tested.

If you need a negative coronavirus test travel certificate, you will need to get tested between 48 to 72 hours prior to your departure or arrival in the country you aim to travel to. Depending on the laboratory you select from the tables above, you’ll get your PCR results within 2 hours and 48 hours after you got tested.

PCR test with results available within 48 hours after you got tested are the cheapest PCR tests.

However, if you need to get an urgent PCR test to get your COVID-19 test certificate as quick as possible, prices will be higher.

  • Usual price range for a non urgent PCR test in Barcelona, from Monday to Sunday, with test results available within 48 hours:
    €80.00 - €90.00

  • Usual price range for an urgent PCR test in Barcelona, from Monday to Sunday, with tests results available within 24 hours:
    €115.00 - €125.00

  • Usual price range for an urgent PCR test in Barcelona, from Monday to Sunday, with tests results available within 2 to 3 hours:
    €150.00

PCR test certificates are delivered during the working days of the testing centres, meaning that if a laboratory is open from Monday to Friday you’ll get your test results from Monday to Friday. Howeverthe labs we recommended above work on Saturdays and Sundays too and therefore deliver results on weekends as well. If you need to get tested on a Saturday or Sunday or if you need to get your PCR test result on a Saturday or Sunday for travel, make sure to book your PCR test at one of the testing centres open during the weekends in Barcelona.

How to book your COVID-19 PCR test in Barcelona

To get a PCR test in Barcelona, most of the medical centres and laboratories require that you book your PCR test in advance before you get tested and and do not accept walk-ins that haven't booked their test advance.

The testing centres we have listed on the comparison tables above all require that you book your PCR test in advance. You will need to book your test online and get your booking confirmation to be able to get tested at the centre.

Depending on the testing center, you'll either need to pay for your test in advance on the website of the testing centre or you'll pay directly at the front desk of the testing centre just before getting tested.

On the tables above, we have highligted in light green the testing centres for which payment is not required upon booking and for which you'll pay for your test at the front desk of the testing centre, before getting tested. The testing centres that are not highlighted in light green require payment in advance upon booking.

Upon booking or after you've booked your test online, some testing centers will require that you make an appointment. Instructions on how to make your appointment will be provided on your booking confirmation. We strongly recommend you make your appointment as soon as possible to make sure you're desired test date and appointment time is available. Do not wait until the last moment to make your appointment. Then, you will need to go to the testing centre at your appointment time with your booking confirmation printed out or on your mobile phone.

However, some other testing centres do not require appointments and you can go to the testing centre whenever you want during opening hours, as long as you have your booking confirmation printed out or on your mobile phone.

When an appointment is needed, we have indicated (Appt) for Appointment next to the opening times of the testing centre in the tables below. You will need to go to the testing centre at your appoinment time with your booking confirmation printed out or on your mobile phone.

When an appointment is not needed and you can go to the testing centre whenever you want during opening hours with your booking confirmation, we have indicated (NA) for No appointment next to the opening times of the testing centre in the tables below.

Advantages of having to make an appointment (Appt) at the testing centre:

  • Limited or no wait time at the testing centre, you get tested at your appointment time and do not have to wait in line before getting tested.

  • Drawbacks of having to make an appointment:

  • No flexibility, you must be at the testing centre on time for your appointment. You cannot just go to the testing centre whenever you want to.

Advantages of not having to make an appointment (NA) at the testing centre:

  • You can go to the testing centre whenever you want during its opening hours, which is convenient if you have a busy schedule and you're not sure if you'll be able to make it on time for your appointment, or if you don't want to be pressed for time.
  • No need to make an appointment, you book your test and you simply show up at the testing centre whenever you want during its opening hours.

Drawbacks of not having to make an appointment:

  • You might have to wait before getting tested if there are people in front of you.

Recent questions on PCR tests in Barcelona

    Date: 11-Oct-2021

    Q. My home country requires that i take a PCR test in Barcelona 48 hours before flying back home. If i test positive, according to Spanish regulations, i’ll need to self-isolate for 10 days. Can i self-isolate at the accomodation of my choice such as my hotel or tourist apartment in Barcelona or will i need to self-isolate in a quarantine hotel ?

    A. You can self-isolate at the accommodation of your choice. Note that we’ve learned from one of the testing centres recommended on our site, that if you cannot afford to extend your stay for 10 additional days at your hotel or tourist accommodation, there are ‘Health Hotels’ in Barcelona were you can self-isolate at no extra charge. If you test positive, the testing centre near Sagrada Familia that we’ve recommended above can assist you and arrange your stay at a ‘Health Hotel’. Therefore if you’re worried to test positive, we recommend you book your PCR test at the testing centre near Sagrada Familia as they’ll assist you with the protocol to follow in case you test positive, they’ll answer any questions you might have and they’ll be able to arrange your self-isolation at a ‘Health Hotel’ in Barcelona if needed.
