How does the at-home PCR test work?

1. You book your PCR test appointment online by filling out a booking form, choosing your test date and a 2-hour time range for the testing centre to visit you at your place. We recommend you book in advance to ensure your preferred time slot is available.

2. The testing centre confirms your exact appointment time within the 2-hour time range you requested in your email and sends you a payment link to pay for your test on a secure payment platform. Advance payment is required to confirm your appointment for your PCR test. Advanced payment is required for this service to ensure you will be at your place on the designated day and time. The testing centre requests advanced payment because they have to plan human resources, and they will have travel expenses for their qualified medical staff to visit you. The at-home testing service has an advanced financial cost to the test centre, and they want to ensure that you will be present at your place at the arranged time. You must make the online payment at least 24 hours before your confirmed PCR test appointment date. Payment needs to be made for same-day bookings as soon as you receive the payment link from the test centre.

At the time of booking, you also receive a voucher confirming your appointment details and containing important information about how the test will be performed and when you'll receive your PCR test certificate.

Make sure to check your email SPAM / JUNK folders as the appointment confirmation email and the voucher confirmation email could be incorrectly filed in these folders by your email provider. Automatic misfiling of valid emails often happens, so make sure you check these folders if you don't see the email confirmation from the test centre within 30 minutes of you making the booking.

3. On the day of your appointment, the testing centre will contact you by phone, SMS or WhatsApp 10 minutes before the medical staff will arrive. The test centre contacts you to ensure you have enough time to prepare. As indicated above, your exact appointment time will be confirmed by the testing centre just after you book your appointment, but, in addition to that, the testing centre will also contact you the same day of your test to confirm the exact arrival time. Bear in mind that the medical staff could arrive a few minutes earlier or later than your confirmed appointment time, depending on the traffic conditions or the check-in wait time at the hotel reception.

4. An English-speaking medical professional from the testing centre will show up at your place with a PCR test kit to perform your PCR nasal or saliva test. The medical professionals are used to performing COVID tests at different accommodation locations, and they also understand the importance of arriving on time for your test. The medical professional will then perform your PCR nasal test or your PCR saliva test, depending on the option you'll select upon booking your test.

If you select a PCR saliva test, make sure not to eat, drink or smoke 30 minutes before your test, as this could invalidate your test. You will have to provide a saliva sample by spitting it into a small funnel connected to a sample bottle. You will need to spit several times until the amount of saliva reaches the mark indicated on the sample bottle. Providing a saliva sample like this is much more comfortable than the nasal swab testing because it is completely non-intrusive.

Before leaving, the medical professional will request you to double-check all your data that will go on your FIT-TO-FLY PCR test certificate. The check is required to make sure the information you provided during your booking was accurate, with no spelling mistakes or other errors.

5. The medical professional will then return your PCR test sample to the laboratory for analysis.

6. The laboratory analyses your sample and issues your PCR test certificate.

COVID at home testing outside the city of Barcelona

Note that if you’re located outside the city of Barcelona, within a 50 kilometre radius of Barcelona, an additional surcharge will apply on top of the price of your PCR test. The additional surcharge will be calculated based on the roundtrip distance between the testing centre in Barcelona that is located near the Sagrada Familia and your accommodation address. If you're located outside of the city of Barcelona, within a 50 kilometre radius, the testing centre will confirm by email the exact amount that needs to be paid in advance through the secure payment link when confirming your appointment time. If you then don't want to proceed with the appointment confirmation, simply reply to the testing centre by email to let them know.

Supplement per kilometre for PCR tests performed outside the city of Barcelona: €0.49

E.g. you want to get tested at your hotel next to Barcelona Airport, which is located in the city of El Prat. The distance between the testing centre near the Sagrada Familia and El Prat is of 15km. The roundtrip distance is therefore of 30km.The total supplement would be 30km multiplied by the supplement per kilometre indicated above. If more than one person is tested at the same address, the supplement will only be charged once, not on the price of each test.

Once your payment has been processed by the secure payment platform, you will receive a payment confirmation notification from the payment platform normally within 5 minutes.

3. The day of your test, the medical staff from the testing centre will visit you at your place at the confirmed appointment time to perform your PCR test. The testing centre will contact you by phone, SMS or WhatsApp 10 minutes before the medical staff arrives to your place so that you can get ready.

7. You receive your FIT-TO-FLY PCR test certificate to your email address. You can use this certificate if you need to travel e.g fly home on a airplane or other transport.

If you need to cancel your at home appointment for your test, appointments can be cancelled for free, without any cancellation charge until 20:00 (Barcelona local time) the day before your appointment date. You will need to send an email to the test centre to request the cancellation and refund. The amount you paid for your test will be refunded in full to the credit card you used to pay your test. You will see the refund to your credit card approximately 5-10 business days later, depending upon your bank.

How to get an EU Digital COVID Certificate for your PCR test

How to get specific PCR test certificates requested by some countries

Some Asian countries request specific PCR test certificates. For example, to fly to Japan, you will need a PCR test certificate in the format requested by the Japanese government. To fly to Singapore, Hong Kong and China, you need a COVID test certificate issued by an accredited ISO 15189 laboratory. With this at-home testing service, you can get any special PCR test certificate you need. However, if you need a special PCR test certificate, please follow the 2 steps below.

1. Inform the test centre of the country you're flying to and your country's special test certificate requirement by replying to the appointment confirmation email from the testing centre. Depending on the special PCR test certificate you need, a supplement may apply on top of the price of your PCR test because of the administration work involved with issuing your special certificate. If a supplement applies, you will need to pay for your test and the supplement before the medical staff comes to your place through the payment link provided by the testing centre by email. Therefore if you need a special PCR test certificate, make sure to inform the test centre right after they've confirmed your appointment time by email.

2. Remind the medical staff that will come to your place of the country you're flying to and of the special test certificate requirement. The medical staff will already have that information. Still, you'll want to make certain they have the information so that you'll receive the PCR test certificate or additional certificate you need. In addition, the medical staff will be able to answer any question you might have on your special test certificate.
