Q: I need to get a PCR test in Barcelona to travel back to France. Can I get a refund in France for the coronavirus test?
A: If you are a French resident registered with the French Health Insurance or if you currently live in Barcelona but are still registered with the French Health Insurance, your PCR test taken in Barcelona to go back to France is covered by the French Health Insurance.
According to French Health Insurance, PCR tests are 100% refundable up to a maximum amount of €60.00 which includes the cost of sampling and analysis. As the price of PCR tests in Barcelona is higher than €60.00, you will be reimbursed up to a maximum of €60.00.
The French Health Insurance refund does not therefore cover the full price of a PCR test done in Barcelona but does cover a good part of it.
Once in France you will have to send the following documents to your French Social Security branch (known as CPAM for ‘Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie’) to obtain your refund which include the following documents:
1. A completed administrative form S31125 entitled 'Soins Reçus à l'Etranger' (which means ‘Care Received Abroad’).
2. An official VAT invoice for the PCR test you took in Barcelona
3. A document justifying your stay in Barcelona such as your flight or train tickets for example. This last requirement is specified on the second page of form S31125'.
You will notice that the administrative form states that for laboratory tests, the medical prescription issued by a doctor for you to get your Covid test must also be attached to your claim for reimbursement.
However note that for stays in the European Union, the French Health Insurance has confirmed that it is actually not necessary to attach a medical prescription to your claim for reimbursement.
It is however compulsory to send the medical prescription issued by a doctor for you to get a Covid test if you claim a refund for a PCR test done outside the European Union.
Therefore, for a PCR test done in Barcelona, if you got a medical prescription to get your PCR test, you can send your medical prescription to the French Health Insurance, but it’s not a compulsory requirement to obtain your refund.
You can double check all this information on the Ameli.fr Health Insurance forum.
However, the clinic we recommend on this page automatically generates a medical prescription anyway for your convenience.
