Flying to Barcelona Airport during Covid-19

Can I fly to Barcelona airport during the coronavirus pandemic? What do I need to fly to Barcelona Airport during Covid-19?

- From / to outside of Spain:

Spanish borders are open without travel restrictions for a list of select countries that you can find on the Spain page of the Reopen Europe official website of the European Union.

However as the Catalan government states on its official page about Covid-19 restrictions throughout Catalonia that entry to Catalonia (Barcelona is located in Catalonia) is only permitted for essential travel, it might be unclear whether this Catalan restriction applies only for travel within Spain or also to international travel to and from Barcelona.

You should know that only the Spanish government has authority on closing or opening its European borders. Therefore the Catalan government can’t deny the entry to the Catalan region or the exit of the Catalan region to travellers coming from outside Spain. Travellers from the above-mentioned list of select countries can enter Spain as Spain borders are open and therefore can enter Catalonia and Barcelona.

The mobility restriction to enter or exit Catalonia only apply to travel within Spain. Ie: You cannot enter Catalonia if you come from Madrid region or any other Spanish region.

As the coronavirus situation changes quickly, some restrictions may apply to specific countries so we recommend that you check the latest updates referring to Spain on the Spain page of the Reopen Europe official website of the European Union.

- From / to other Spanish regions:

The Catalan government has established that until further notice no one can enter or exit Catalonia except for the following exceptions:
• Go to health and social centres
• Go to work or carry out business, institutional or legal obligations
• Go to school and university
• Go back to your home
• Assist elderly, dependent and vulnerable people
• Go to financial or insurance institutions
• Perform urgent actions before public, judicial or notarized organisations
• Renew permits and official documents and non-deferrable administrative procedures
• Take non-deferrable exams or tests
• Force majeure or situation of real need
• Any other activity of similar nature than the above exceptions that can be justified

Mobility restrictions in Catalonia and from / to other Spanish regions may change frequently. We recommend you check our Covid updates page for the latest time sensitive information.

Barcelona Airport is open and flights are operating, but obviously less than before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since 23 November 2020, if you arrive to Barcelona Airport from a country qualified as a ‘high risk country’ in relation to the coronavirus by the Spanish Health Ministry you will need to have a negative PCR test travel certificate. TMA and RT-LAMP test results are also accepted. You will need to get tested within 72 hours prior to your arrival at Barcelona Airport.

You will also need to complete an online Public Health Control Form to get your Public Health Control QR code that you will need to show at the Health Control checkpoint at Barcelona Airport.

As explained above, in order to limit the spread of the Covid-19, no one can enter or exit Catalonia until further notice with the exception of the above-mentioned shortlist of valid reasons for travel.

Passengers from the following countries and regions are allowed to enter Catalonia through Barcelona Airport provided they meet the valid reasons for travel stated above:

There’s no quarantine period upon arrival to Barcelona Airport.

Coronavirus tests at Barcelona Airport

How can I get a Covid-19 test at Barcelona Airport upon arrival to be allowed to enter Spain? Can I get a coronavirus test at Barcelona Airport to fly to another country?

No, at the time of writing, you cannot get a coronavirus test at Barcelona Airport. Unlike some other airports, there is no service yet to provide PCR tests, lamp tests or rapid tests at Barcelona airport. A personal coronavirus test which you can order is not a service provided at the airport.

If you need an antigen or a PCR test travel certificate to fly back to your country or to fly to another country you can easily get tested in a private lab in Barcelona.

We remind you that if you’re coming from a country qualified as a ‘high risk country’ by the Spanish Health Ministry you will need to have a negative Covid-19 PCR test certificate, a negative TMA test certificate or RT-LAMP certificate made within 72 hours prior to your arrival at Barcelona Airport.

Passengers arriving to Barcelona Airport without a negative test travel certificate might be tested with an antigen test at Barcelona Airport and might also be fined for breaching the Spanish Public Health General Law 33/2011 of the 4th of October.

Passengers showing Covid-19 symptoms such as fever, cough or breathing difficulties at the Health Control checkpoint might also get tested with an antigen test at Barcelona Airport even if they have a negative test certificate.

If it is deemed that you need to be tested at the airport the price of the antigen test is covered by the Spanish Government, you won’t have to pay for it.

However, if you develop Covid-19 symptoms whilst in Barcelona you can book an online medical consultation with a doctor in your own language.

Going from / to Barcelona airport during curfew and mobility restrictions

Can I go to Barcelona Airport or come back from Barcelona Airport during curfew hours or when there are mobility restrictions that require me to stay within the limits of the city of Barcelona?

Yes, you can go to Barcelona Airport and come back from Barcelona Airport during curfew hours as long as you can justify your flight for one of the above-mentioned valid reasons to travel.

The above-mentioned valid reasons to travel also apply for being outside during curfew hours.

Make sure to fulfill the self-responsible statement for night journeys during curfew hours and mark the exception for which you’re outside during curfew hours.

We also recommend you have a supporting document that proves that you’re outside during curfew hours for one of the above-mentioned exceptions to avoid any issue in case you are checked by a control officer.

Barcelona Airport is located in the city of El Prat, at a distance from about 12 km from the city of Barcelona. The airport is not located inside the city of Barcelona. Therefore in case you need to go to Barcelona Airport in El Prat or come back from it during mobility restrictions that oblige you to stay within the limits of the city of Barcelona you’ll need to fulfill the self-responsible statement for journeys outside the city of Barcelona.

To know more on the latest mobility restrictions in Barcelona ywe recommend you check the latest Covid-related updates in Barcelona.

Our Insider Tip

Note that on the official website of the Catalan Region where you’ll find the self-responsible statements, the names of the self-responsible statements are not always up-to-date. For example, as of the 5 January only 3 self-responsible statements are available on the website of the Catalan Region: the statement for night journeys, the statement for journeys inside and outside Catalonia and the statement for journeys inside and outside the comarca (the county) but the statement for journeys outside the city that you need from the 7 to the 17 January is not yet available. So in case the name of the statement you’re looking for is not yet on the official website of the Catalan Region we recommend you choose the statement name that is closest to the one you want.

Am I allowed to pick up someone at Barcelona Airport or accompany someone at Barcelona airport during curfew hours or when there are mobility restrictions that require me to stay within the limits of the city of Barcelona?

First of all, you should know that only passengers with a boarding card are allowed inside the airport of Barcelona. Therefore if you want to pick someone up at the airport or take someone to the airport you will need to wait outside the airport.

However, passengers that need physical assistance can be accompanied by someone else who is assisting them even if the accompanying person is not a passenger.

If you are the accompanying person to physically assist them, we recommend you have the supporting document that proves that the person you’re accompanying needs assistance so that you will be allowed to enter the airport without any issue.

Picking up someone at the airport or taking someone to the airport during curfew hours is not in the list of the exceptions that enable you to be outside during curfew hours on the self-responsible statement for night journeys or that enable you to go outside the limits of your city when there are mobility restrictions that require you to stay inside the limits of Barcelona. Remember that Barcelona Airport is not located in the city of Barcelona but in the city of El Prat.

However, if you’re accompanying a person that needs physical assistance, it should fall under the exception that is about taking care of the elderly, dependents and disabled on the self-responsible statement for night journeys and on the self responsible statement for journeys outside the city when this mobility restriction is in place.

If you’re arriving at Barcelona Airport during curfew hours we recommend you book in advance a taxi, or a private car with a driver.
Taxis arranged in advance are sanitized by the drivers between each taxi journey.
