The site of the Magic Fountain in the grounds of Montjuïc
The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc is often cited as Barcelona's most romantic spectacle - a sure-fire spine tingler. Situated in front of Barcelona's dramatically grand palace, a large circular fountain is the site for a breath taking display using water, light and music. A fifteen minute intervals the fountains are lit up with bright colours and shoots of water appear to dance to music that is played along with it.
This is also a way to be romantic without spending a penny. There is no admission fee to the display.
Time may change due to season, we advice you to check the time on their site.

|Barcelona from Mount Tibidabo|
The city of Barcelona is flanked by two mountains. The hardest of these to reach the top of is Tibidabo. Tibidabo is 512 meters above sea level and it offers impressive views of the entire city of Barcelona. At the top of Tibidabo mountain is a Gothic church and a quaint old amusement park. Curiously these two sit quite well together. Depending on which is more up your approach to the marriage proposal, this provides two sites for an exciting or romantic proposal spot.
Those with a sense of adventure may wish to board Tibidabo theme park's aeroplane ride or big wheel to carefully get down on one knee.
Those who have an eye for beauty will enjoy the terrace area in front of the church.
If you are looking for a really romantic break, you will also find the luxurious five star Gran Hotel La Florida on top of Mount Tibidabo.
See also our page on Tibidabo theme park, which also includes instructions on how to get to the top of the mountain.
Barcelona is packed full of romantic restaurants. Its old buildings allow for cavernous settings with brick walls and low lighting. It is, of course, a matter of taste as to what you consider to be a romantic dining location. I have chosen a few that may be of particular interest:
- Torre d'Alta Mar is a restaurant located at the top of the cable car tower. It offers views of the city in a luxurious and exotic restaurant location.
- Tapioles53 A Review of Tapioles 53 Restaurant in Barcelona is a restaurant with something special. It seats only twenty people, allowing for an intimate setting. It serves food that is market fresh in a candle lit and cosy environment.
|The Olympic Torch - Montjuïc|
Aside from Tibidabo, the Mountain sitting at the other side of Barcelona is Montjuïc. This mountain is easier to get to the top of and also has more amusements along the way. A stroll up the mountain will see you passing everything from the Miró Foundation to the Olympic Stadium to a plethora of Botanical Gardens. At the top of Montjuïc there is an old castle.
During the summer months the castle plays host to an outdoor cinema in the moats of the castle. This is a romantic scene as people stream up the winding road to the top of Montjuïc lugging blankets, picnic baskets and bottles of cava. For more information as to the programme and a special bus running in conjunction with screening times check the website.
If you are looking for a more private setting in which to ask that all-important question, simply take your bottle of cava and sit on a wall looking down over the lights of the city of Barcelona.
For a romantic way to reach Montjuïc, you could consider taking the Cable car from Barceloneta Beach.
Barcelona's Old Town is renowned for its charm and appeal. The area of El Born is often overlooked for the more tourist-focused Gothic Quarter. However El Born is an area loved by locals for its picturesque squares, small bars and fine dining. An afternoon's stroll through the barrio is likely to lead to many potential proposal opportunities. Just take a wander through the area and see what you see - I'll leave the rest up to you.
It has been fun talking to friends and gathering ideas as to where people consider to be Barcelona's most romantic setting. Please let us know if you think there is anywhere that I've missed and, more importantly, how you got on.
