Via Laietana as a Parking Location
Via Laietana is a long straight road that separates the two neighbourhoods La Ribera and the Gothic quarter (historic quarter) and joins Barceloneta (beach) area with Plaça Urquinaona at either end. Urquinaona square is only a few minutes walk from Plaça de Catalunya. Palau de La Musica Catalana is also only a few minutes walk from Via Laietana as is the Picasso museum. You also have Plaça Sant Jaume only a short walk from Via Laietana this is where the famous Catalan dancing takes place on select Saturday and Sunday evenings. During the La Mercè Festival (the biggest festival of the year in Barcelona that occurs in mid to late September each year) the entire length of Via Laietana becomes host to the "Dragon Runs" where celebrations with firework, flames and street crackers takes place by "hooded devils" that dance down the steets throwing fire crackers and being generally very loud. It is perhaps a good idea to consider parking in a different location when the La Mercè festival on if you need ready access to your car.
Via Laietana also has an excellent organic food shop Veritas and the famous Santa Caterina market is also a short walk from Via Laietana.
Via Laietana has 3 metro stops that are close by. These are Urquinaona (red and yellow metro lines) , Jaume I (yellow metro line) and Barceloneta (yellow line). These lines give you ready access to the rest of the city via the metro underground system.
Summing up, if the La Mercè festival is not on at the time of you visit then Via Laietana offers you an excellent location to park your car for its central location and ease of access to many historic sites of interest in the city all within easy waking distance.
